Credit: The Sod Busters. Utica, NY, circa late 1920s-early '30s. (Collection of
Shlomo Pestcoe) Here we have an old-time country string band from Upstate New
York. Apparently they performed on WIBX,
a Utica radio station which debuted in 1925. The lineup is Sam Sterling (guitar, possibly a
Gibson
L-1 [c.1918-1925] or an
L-3
[1918-27]-- in either case, this is a rare one since it has a "snakehead" peghead!), Sefras
(?) Smith (fiddle), Zeke Taylor (harmonicas) and Cy Perkins (banjo). Not to be
confused with the
Hoosier Sod Busters, headliners on Chicago's WLS
Barn Dance in the late 1930s.
