SHLOMO PESTCOE has been a leading figure in New York City's
old-time country and traditional music scenes since the early 1980s. He is a master of an extensive
array of musical instruments as well as a rich diversity of traditional
social/dance music forms. Shlomo also researches ethnic/regional folk/vernacular musical instruments and traditions from around the world. In recent years,
he has been working with other researchers, such as Swedish banjologist
Ulf Jägfors
and
Daniel Laemouahuma Jatta, a master of the Jola
akonting folk lute
from Gambia, delving into the banjo's roots in West Africa.
Since 1990, Shlomo has been delighting kids and their grownups with his "edu-taining performances" as a family music performer and artist/educator. He's best known for his work with The Imagination Workshop Band (1996-2002) and Gillygaloo.
Shlomo is also a member of The Lucky Dogs, a new early blues/ Southern roots music band with Bob Guida, Pat Conte, Steve Uhrik, Trip Henderson and Peter Kohman.
Shlomo currently teaches guitar,
mandolin, banjo, ukulele and fiddle on staff at the
Musician's General Store
(Cobble Hill, Brooklyn), and is also the Curator/Photo Archivist of
